Solvent Direct and ASTM: Leading the Charge in Butane Purity and Extraction Industry Standards

Scroll down to take the ASTM D37.04 Compressed Gas Quality and Safety Initiative Standards Survey and share your thoughts on the future of safe lab supply.

Since 2016, Solvent Direct has been at the forefront of solvent purity standards in the extraction industry. By collaborating closely with major producers, Solvent Direct has made significant strides in improving gas purity, implementing preventative measures, and eliminating potential contamination sources. Their unwavering commitment to transparency and rigorous purity standards continues to drive meaningful change across the industry.

Over the past two years, Solvent Direct has partnered with ASTM International to develop new standards for extraction supplies. This partnership has culminated in the 2023 Solvent Direct ASTM Scholarship Program, which aims to elevate representation for hands-on extractors within the standards-setting community. Through a thorough analysis of the entire supply chain, Solvent Direct is pioneering innovative methods to identify and address potential contamination risks—ranging from transportation and storage to cylinder maintenance.

The results of these efforts have led to the ASTM Compressed Gas Safety & Quality Initiative. Today, Solvent Direct is excited to announce a new opportunity for extractors to actively contribute their insights and experience through the ASTM Compressed Gas Safety & Quality Initiative Proposed Standards Survey. We encourage all clients and blog readers to participate and help shape standards that promote safe and responsible extraction practices.

The ASTM D37.04 Compressed Gas Quality and Safety Initiative is a collaborative effort between industry leaders, consumers, and regulators, dedicated to establishing comprehensive standards for compressed gas quality and safety. This initiative focuses on developing specifications, test methods, guidelines, and best practices to ensure the purity and safety of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed gases like CO2, butane, and propane, and their application in the cannabinoid industry. By addressing key gaps in current protocols, the task group aims to prevent contamination and inefficiencies caused by substandard gases, while holding suppliers and operators accountable.

As the extraction industry continues to grow, the need for stringent lab supply purity standards becomes increasingly critical. Solvent Direct’s proactive approach is not only enhancing consumer safety but also establishing a new benchmark for quality and responsibility across the entire industry.
